Is Your EdTech Stack Built on Trust...or Governance?

For years, seeing a well-known name like PowerSchool on a contract felt reassuring. Large market share. Long track record. Broad adoption. It signaled stability.

But the recent PowerSchool cybersecurity incident (PowerSchool Security Notice, Jan. 2025) reminded all of us of something important:

Scale does not eliminate risk.

This isn’t about one company. It’s about a larger reality in K–12.

When a widely adopted platform experiences a breach, the ripple effects extend across states, districts, families, and compliance offices. It exposes how interconnected-and how vulnerable-our vendor ecosystems can be.

Vendor trust must be reinforced with vendor governance.

That’s why Reinforce Accountability is a core pillar of my G.R.E.A.T. Compliance™ Framework. Not because vendors are bad actors, but because oversight is a leadership responsibility.

Here’s what matters right now:

• Ask for process, not promises.

Security claims should be backed by documented governance frameworks, incident response protocols, and clear AI/data policies.

• Map your data flows.

If leadership cannot clearly articulate where student data travels and who has access, that’s a governance gap -not a vendor problem.

• Institutionalize oversight.

Vendor risk review should be cyclical, documented, and embedded into procurement and renewal processes.

Innovation in education is accelerating. AI integration is expanding. Digital ecosystems are growing more complex.

The question isn’t whether to adopt technology.

The question is whether we are governing it with the same rigor we apply to finance, HR, and student discipline.

If you’re unsure where your district/organization currently stands, I created a brief AI Governance Risk Snapshot™ for education leaders.

It’s a 5-minute executive diagnostic designed to identify governance posture and potential exposure areas across policy, vendor oversight, and compliance alignment.

You can access it here:

Transparency builds trust. Governance sustains it.

Let’s elevate the standard.
