AI Isn't Optional Anymore-Governance Is

Ohio just made “AI in schools” a governance issue-not a classroom debate.

By July 1, 2026, every Ohio public school district, community school, and STEM school must adopt a formal AI policy for how students and staff can use artificial intelligence.

Here’s the part too many leaders are missing: this isn’t about banning ChatGPT.

It’s about building guardrails that protect kids, protect staff, and protect the integrity of learning.

The state’s model policy points districts toward the real work:

• Clear expectations for acceptable use (students + staff)

• Academic integrity that keeps student effort at the center

• Data privacy (PII + FERPA) and strong vetting of AI tools

• Procurement and vendor accountability

• Ongoing review-because AI won’t stop evolving for our policy calendar

• And yes… explicit alignment with special education considerations and family trust

If your district treats this like a “tech department task,” you’ll miss the moment.

Because the question isn’t: “Will students use AI?”

They already are.

The question is: “Will adults lead with clarity, ethics, and equity… or will we let the fastest tool set the rules?”

Ohio is putting the deadline on the calendar.

Leadership is deciding what happens next.

At Bacote-Owens, we help you cut through the noise with our G.R.E.A.T. Compliance™ Framework. We focus on what others miss: Aligning Policy with Purpose. This isn't just about rules; it’s about leading with intention and protecting your legacy.

This is where Compliance Meets Compassion and Innovation Meets Impact.
